I've trying to do some research about the relationship between Kratos and Raine, if there was any to begin with.
But it would seeem that a topic that involves Tales of Symphonia and Kratos screams my sister's name... (Which is named "HolySong" on the boards)
So this Nintendo Update entry is written by her for her people AND WITH GOOD GRAMMAR?
Thoughts on KratosxRaine
These are my opinions and thoughts on KratosxRaine. Disproving KratosxRaine, might I add. Don't like them? Don't read them, then. However, even if you don't like my side of things, I ask you to at least consider my arguments and what I have written. You are not obligated to change your opinion upon reading this.
Throughout Tales of Symphonia fanfictions, I’ve seen a large population of KratosxRaine stories. This shocks me, since the majority of these writers know that Kratos is Lloyd’s father, and that he had a relationship with Anna. KratosxRaine, in my opinion, almost seems like an excuse to put Kratos in a pairing with someone alive. The pairing is plausible if you don’t know that Kratos loved Anna, but once you know all the truths about his character, it doesn’t seem possible that Kratos would have any feelings for Raine.
KratosxRaine could be considered a fan pairing- a pairing in which fans place two characters together without any solid proof of a relationship in the game they came from. By ‘solid proof’, I’m not talking about two characters simply being friends or a character choosing to associate with a certain character over the others. I’m talking about things that characters do that actually show proof of a possible romantic relationship, such as Sheena showing that she has a crush on Lloyd through her nervousness and blushing. Pairings like YuanxMartel, RegalxAlicia and KratosxAnna really have no argument disproving them, because the story clearly states that these relationships happened. KratosxRaine is a fan pairing because neither Kratos nor Raine show any romantic feelings towards one another. The most either did to one another was talk. KratosxRaine fans may argue that Raine may have been showing mild feelings towards Kratos, because she chooses to talk to him over other party members, but consider who were those other party members. She really had no one else she could talk maturely to. Lloyd has not yet matured and is rather impatient, Colette in a sense still has the mind of a child because of her isolation, and Genis is a child, intelligent, but not yet as wise as Raine. That really is no basis for an argument. If you use it, you’re basically saying that any two adults who talk to each other, because they choose to speak to another adult over a person younger than them, are in love. If you considered the extremities, the most the relationship could be would be one-sided. It might be possible, for Raine to have some feelings towards Kratos, but I really don’t believe that Kratos would return it. Besides, after he “betrays” Lloyd’s party, she expresses some anger and disbelief at him. After that, she really does not show any further feelings, positive or negative, towards Kratos. I don’t believe that she even interacts with him in any way following his betrayal. Unfortunately, many people think that this is good enough to go crazy over KratosxRaine, which I honestly think has so little basis that it puzzles me.
In addition, do you think Kratos is the type to fall in
love spontaneously? It’s hard to imagine how he fell in love with Anna, so how could he do so with a random woman he hardly talked with? Not to mention this is after the death of a woman he cared about intensely AND probably the only woman who could make him feel love. Maybe it’s just me, as a Kratos obsesser, but I don’t see how he could overcome that sadness at Anna’s death to love someone else. To me, it seems like he gave up on love after she died. He even tells Lloyd that “life felt meaningless” to him following the loss of his family. It shows just how devastated he was.
On the other side of the coin, I don’t think Raine would be interested in a relationship either. It doesn’t seem like Raine is interested in that type of thing; she never displays any of that kind of emotion, and her main focus is on archaeology and learning new things. I don’t think she cares, period. Also, about her level of maturity and wisdom- to me, I don’t think hers matches up to Kratos’. I don’t dispute the fact that she is mature, but I get the feeling, a gut feeling of sorts, that tells me that Kratos’ is so much more advanced than Raine’s. I suppose this shows best when Raine goes into ‘Ruin Mode’. In addition, Raine has a tendency to put others down. This is not likely something Kratos would approve of, especially if he saw how she treated his beloved son in that manner.
Furthermore, Raine doesn’t even trust Kratos when he’s in the party. She interrogates him about his strangely wide knowledge of Summon Spirits, and she questions him about why he came along on the journey. After he betrays them, she says that she felt something strange about him. Probably out of all the party members at that time, she distrusted him the most. How could this become love? Yes, she does appear sad following his betrayal, but that sadness is disappointment at herself. She was angry that she couldn’t foresee Kratos’ betrayal, even though she suspected it, and warn the others of it beforehand. If she truly were sad because Kratos left, I would have expected her to at least talk to him, if not become happy, when/if he returns to the party. Furthermore, look at Raine throughout the course of the game. You can see her time and time again telling Lloyd to not trust something so readily. Don’t you think she feels the same about Kratos? She’s wary of that, extremely wary, and she displays that several times throughout the story. For her, I believe it’s ‘once a traitor, always a traitor’.
Some fans may tell Kratos
to “get over it” and put him in a relationship he wouldn’t ever be in. But the thing is, he doesn’t get over it. He can remain single for the rest of his life, for your information—it’s not a big deal. Some fans seem to think that one cannot remain single or even be single, which I find kind of…illogical. If you think Kratos needs love, he has it in his son, and that’s good enough for him. Throughout the game you can see him act nobly, almost in a knight-like way. Somehow, with the amount of love he felt for Anna, I feel that he would think he was betraying Anna if he went off with someone else. Kratos can’t get over it. He simply does not get over things easily, and that is a fact. If there’s one word that describes Kratos, it’s ‘devoted’. He was devoted to his wife; he is devoted to his son now that he has found him again. To send him off with Raine twists his personality and takes away many of the characteristics that fans admire in him. One of the things that appeal to me about Kratos is his undying loyalty and devotion, and by putting him with Raine, kills that entirely.
Also, do you think Lloyd would condone such a thing? Lloyd clearly loves his mother, even though she is dead, and do you think that he would be happy if his father suddenly turned on her and fell in love with Raine? If your father suddenly fell in love with your teacher, I think you’d feel a little awkward too. Lloyd would most likely be upset that Kratos turned on Anna and fell in love with Raine, and being Lloyd, he would voice his opinion, and then what would Kratos do? Ignore his son? Somehow, I don’t think so. Lloyd is the only person Kratos places his love in after Anna’s death, and he obviously would not ignore Lloyd’s plight. Furthermore, Kratos is the kind of character to think about his decisions carefully before taking action. I doubt it would even get to the point that Lloyd would have to speak up, because Kratos would think about a possible relationship with Raine, think about Lloyd, and then forget about it. Why? Because that’s Kratos.
The last reason is kind of strange, but I’ll throw it in anyway. Think about Lloyd and Genis’ situation if Kratos and Raine got married. Genis would become Lloyd’s step-uncle. Genis is five years younger than Lloyd. In my opinion, that kind of thing seems too weird, even in a video game, a field where developers usually strive for originality. I doubt the developers would have had something THAT strange possible within the story. I think it’s just too weird to be considered.
Another point I have to say, and it doesn’t relate specifically to KratosxRaine. In fact, it goes out to all Kratosxperson other than Anna pairings. Anna is dead. So what? He still loves her, he still cares for her, and if there’s one thing he’s not going to do, it’s get over her. Think about it. For 4,000 years he lived up there with Mithos, basically a puppet in his hands. Apathetic for 4,000 years, and then he finds Anna, who teaches him love, teaches him happiness, and brings the only real joy and warmth he’s ever felt. Then he loses her. He gets devastated over the loss, and that’s when he becomes depressed and angsty, as far as to suggest wanting death. Then, according to fans, he goes and falls in love with a woman he hardly ever interacted with. Does this make sense? He goes through all his pain, his depression, even his suicidal feelings, and suddenly falls in love with this other woman? He still cares about Anna, even though she is dead. He gets infuriated when Kvar insults her, and stabs him mercilessly, something that might uncover his true identity. I think at that point, he was so angry he didn’t care. Now, do you really think Kratos is a person to burst into random fits of anger? I don’t think so. Anna must have been very special, so special as to induce
that anger in Kratos when Kvar insulted her. In addition, sometimes I see people support KratosxRaine without even recognizing that Kratos cared so much about Anna. Now that is ignorant if anything. . What I find ironic, however, is how some fans state that Kratos cares about Anna in their story, and yet they also portray him as a besotted schoolboy-like character lusting after Raine and not even feeling any remorse at leaving his life’s love behind.

To sum things up, these are my opinions o n KratosxRaine, the Kratos pairing most commonly seen in fan fictions. I am not saying you have to change your opinion on the pairing following this rant, but what I’m trying to say is that the pairing does not stay true to the characters. By placing them together, you alter their personalities, especially Kratos’.
